In 1979, the FIG Women’s Technical Committee published symbols for the principal elements performed in women’s artistic gymnastics. Between, 1980 and 1986, the symbol notation continued to evolve. Symbol notation was used at the Olympic Games, World Championships, World Cups, and European Championships) and verified by “Scientific Technical Collaborators,” judges who were charged with the responsibility of notating each routine at these events and then checking by means of video analysis. A “Proposal for the Introduction of an International Symbols Language for Women’s Artistic Gymnastics was then published in 1986. In 1990-1991, Ellen Berger, President of the FIG/WTC (1976-1992) directed Margo Dietz, Germany, to develop video films and an accompanying brochure to be used for training international judges to use shorthand. The films were produced at the Research Institute for Physical Culture and Sport in Leipzig, Germany. The symbol for each element and its variation appeared for the first time in the 1993 edition of the FIG Code of Points.
International Brevet judge Jackie Fie became the next President of the FIG (1992 – 2004). When she retired from judging, Madame Fie donated her video collection to NAWGJ for educational and historical purposes, including the shorthand training classes from 1990-91. The VHS tape collection was digitized and then edited for posting on the NAWGJ website by Cookie Batsche (NAWGJ President 2020–2024). The original unedited videos are on file with the NAWGJ Historian. Examples used in the shorthand videos were taken from 1981 – 1990 intercontinental and continental competitions. The videos continue to have value, not only for their educational contributions but also for their historical insights into this extraordinary era in women’s gymnastics.
